And on we go, and on we go....

I really miss having a good heathen/asatru discussion list... you know one where there are good discussions that don't center around endless conspiracy theories and people who delight in mind games....
Just submitted two poems to Witches and Pagans magazine, hopefully will hear back soon. If they aren't interested I'll try Circle next, but I really don't like their submission policy. (shrug) What can you do? There are so few pagan magazines out there to submit to....
And Paige has five appts this week, but hopefully we can start cutting those back now that she is improving....

Paige Update

Just a quick update on Paige - she has seen an immunoligist and he was very hopeful that other parts of her immune system would eventually strengthen to compensate for the area she lacks, which is good, and said she definitely needs tubes in her ears, which is less good. She also was part of a clinical study in UConn and was diagnosed with a speech delay and a sensory development delay which she needs therapy for. She is getting the speech therapy through birth to three, but the occupational therapy for the sensory issues is proving a challenge. No one who does it takes my insurance within an hours drive of my home, so we are trying to convince a local therapist to take her out of network.... Otherwise summer is treating her well, she hasn't been sick since June (a bout of the flu which nearly put her in the hospital) and taking Allegra daily for her seasonal allergies seems to be really helping, as much as I hate putting her on allergy meds at her age. Now if we could just get some weight on her.....

miscellany

Well, my GPA is 3.95 and my graduation date for my bachelors is 9/12/10, which oddly enough is my oldest daughters seventh birthday....
I have a spear now, which honestly is just cool : )  and I have a charm necklace for seidhr work now which I have no idea if it has any tradition behind it but it works for me. Still need to get my staff done....
On the metaphysical end of things still struggling between CR and asatru and bearing the brunt of One-Eyed frustration at my lack of proactive motivation. Which basically means a lot of frustration all around. Damn religion : P the seidhr is going well, working on weather control - hello sunshine! - and gearing up to do some very small public oracular seidhr which should be fun. Or nerve wracking LOL
Will be reading runes and tarot at Subfest thursday through sunday, lets see if the weather behaves for me....

I am very bad. I got my tax return and just spent almost a thousand dollars on books at amazon.com....I don't regret it, but seriously, this is a sign of an addiction. And I have *no* idea where I am going to put them when they get here....

Amber, Tattoos and a healthy Paige

So it's been a good weekend....I spent too much money on amber jewelry, possibly a sign that I need an amber twelve step program. Which is odd since I didn't think I liked amber that much (shrug) but it's all cool. And I managed to annoy a retail clerk at one store which was selling fake amber by pointing out to him that his "amber" was actually plastic : )  He was not amused, which for some reason struck me as really funny...
And I have new tattoos, always a sign of a good time. Finally got my ravens - yippee! They came out great and I'm really pleased. And I'm already scheduled for my next tat, a quarter sleeve on my right arm which incorporates the kindred logo, a ship in a storm tossed sea, with the SLK bind rune on the sail. I had fun drawing it up, intending it just for me, but my cohorts like it so much they are going to get it too.
And in other news, I started a facebook group for asatru moms, spent a chunk of my student loan rebate on non-school related heathen books (yeah I know I'm addicted but I don't fight it, I embrace it) , am two week sfrom completing my first two college courses and.....drumroll......my dad's lawsuit is finally getting settled. And Paige has been healthy for an entire month! So life is good

Yikes!

Wow, am I a slacker or what? I didn't realize it had been so long since I'd posted an entry here. Well, let's see I'm in college right now, online, going for a bachelors in Psychology so that's pretty crazy and my mother is living with my family which is just stressful. Other than that same old working-two-jobs-taking-care-of-two-kids-and-random-seidhr-madness as usual ; ) And it's kind of scary when that's my measure of normalacy.

So now I'm 30

So, my thirtieth birthday has come and gone, and I celebrated like any responsible adult and mother of two by getting my nose peirced LOL Well, hey it looks cool. I have a whole list of tattoos still to get (sigh) but they'll have to wait until I have more money.
In other news, Paige is doing okay, on antibiotics for the second time in three weeks with another double ear infection. Amara is loving school and decided she wants to be a daisy scout and a cheerleader....Gods help me. I took both the kinder down to New Haven yesterday for TRK's Alfarblot - and Wow! - am I tired today. Lots of fun though. My kindred - Stormlight - is going to have an Odinblot the end of this month which should be interesting. I'm doing better with embracing my role as gythia and priestess but haven't had much time to do any serious esoteric practice recently....actually haven't had much time to do anything lately.    : P

The Diagnosis

  • Sep. 30th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
raven tat
So we have a diagnosis now  - Paige has Selective IGa Deficiency with a total abscence of IGa. What that means is that her body doesn't produce any of the immonuglobin sub group a which is why she is sick so often - this is  the part of the immune system which defends the mucous membranes so one of the characteristics of this disorder is a susceptibility to ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. It also puts her at a significantly higher risk for autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatiod arthritis and means  if she ever needs a blood transfusion she would probably have an allergic reaction to the IGa in the donor blood, so it would have to be filtered out first. Well, at least now we know what's going on......

Paige's Naming / Blessing

Well, we finally had Paige's naming/blessing ceremony and all went well. She looked too cute in her little white dress and the amber necklace my friend Allison gave her....given her weak immune issues I saved rain water from Tropical Storm Hannah to use for the blessing, it seemed appropriate to use water from a powerful storm to bless her. The ceremony itself was really nice, although I missed the friends who couldn't make it. I'm nearly over the mortification of my husband's family loudly discussing the fact that it was a Wiccan ceremony and telling RIck - the gothi doing the ceremony - that they thought I was Wiccan and going to catholic church, then after I realized that Scott had taken the path of least resistance and told them I was Wiccan because they knew what it was and I and RIck clarified about Asatru, they loudly asked me how I was "inducting" Amara into heathenry.....ah, the joys of family. And after Scott swore to me he had explained it all to them. But it was still very nice, and now she is all officailly named and accepted into the community.  : )

the good news and the bad news...

Well we finally got my nine month old, Paige, referred to an allergist and the good news is she doesn't have any of the food allergies her pediatrician told us she had. The bad news is that the reason she kept getting sick so much is that she has an immunoglobin deficiency. They're still trying to figure out exactly what's going on, but have warned us that because her immune system is weak she'll be suseptible to everything she's exposed to - which is just *great* since I take her on the school bus I drive every afternoon.....

Kids, yoga, and culture

I just got three yoga for kids DVD's and they rock! My four year old loves them and we do the routines now morning and evening. It's so great that she's interested in yoga and enjoys doing it so much. She's at a point right now when she's very interested in everything I do and it's nice to be able to share yoga with her. She also does devotionals and ritual with me which makes everything a lot crazier and more fun...I worry sometimes about how hard it could be for her in school becuase of our alternative lifestyle, but I can't imagine not sharing these things with her either.

Good kids movies

I recently bought a copy of the Secret of Roan Innish, which I saw in the theater and loved, but my four year old wasn't very interested. Which led me to wonder what good movies are there out there for kids that convay a sense of Irish culture? So far Amara likes Riverdance, but most  Irish movies are too mature for her. I'll have to start hunting for better options because I think movies are a good way with young children to help them "see" the stories. I read her Irish stories all the time but sometimes the concepts - like what a curragh is - are hard for her to grasp. It all gets back to the question of how to raise children in one culture when surrounded by another...

devotionals with an infant

So, I'm having a hard time keeping up with my morning devotionals right now. Paige is eight months old and doesn't want to be held while I say "good morning" to everybody, but I can't put her down without being really distracted and I never seem to have any free time in the a.m....I've worked out a shortened version, but I miss the sense of peace I used to get with the more, uh, calm, mornings. It's a shame to, becuase Amara is right at an age when she likes helping me light my candles and  talking to the gods, and spirits. Ahh, well, I suppose soon enough I'll miss her being a baby....
